The Messenger

Writer: BrendiBrendi

Awhile back I was debating whether joining a ZOOM meeting dedicated to us, students, from my CUNY school (like a welcome party) or participating in an anonymous group for caregivers. They were both for me but something about going to the school thing felt isolating. Therefore, I felt like I needed the caregiving group more because what I've been going through with my mom is not easy.

I wondered if I had made the right choice and I realized I did by getting confirmation. The confirmation started with the moderator of the group, Monique. She mentioned that she had seen a red robin again from her window and wondered what it meant. She had shared a little bit of her story in a webinar about depression in caregiving. Monique is a nurse and was both of her parents' caregiver. Both, very honorable, acts of service. I immediately went to Google to retrieve the meaning of seeing a red robin, and this is what I found: "A red robin, in spiritual terms, generally symbolizes new beginnings, renewal, hope, and a message of comfort, often associated with the return of a loved one who has passed away."

I was so happy when she read what I had copied from Google and pasted into the chat. I knew right then and there that my purpose was to be a messenger and provide her with that message; that she wasn't alone and her parents were with her. My heart automatically felt full. I proceeded to engage in the chat with Monique and the other caregivers.

It was so much fun especially when someone said that they do puzzles to distract themselves from worry/fear. I suggested everyone try out Wordle and the Mini Crossword from the NYTimes app. Monique said, "Yes, I love Wordle." She asked what yesterday's word was, and I found it. She questioned what the meaning of it was and handy dandy Google helped me define the word.

As nervous and excited I was about embarking on this new journey, where I am a caregiver, I'm glad I was able to find a community where I don't feel alone. If you or a loved one want to learn about it, type "Office for the Aging" on Google. Sending lots of love!<3
